Government updates immigration rules for EU nationals after Brexit

Employers of EU nationals should remind staff that the EU Settlement Scheme will apply to EU nationals resident in the UK by 11pm on 31 October 2019, regardless of whether the UK leaves the European Union with a deal or not. Government guidance sets out the deadlines and application process.
Those employers who rely on EU nationals to make up their work force, will be interested to know that the government has published updated guidance on immigration arrangements for EU citizens arriving after Brexit, which applies to any EU nationals who are not resident in the UK by 31 October 2019, if the UK leaves without a deal. Until 31 December 2020, EU nationals will still be able to enter and work in the UK without a visa. Those wishing to remain resident in the UK after 31 December 2020 must apply under the European temporary leave to remain scheme (Euro TLR). The deadline for applications to the Euro TLR is 31 December 2020. From January 2021, a new immigration system is expected but details are yet to be published.
